Donating New Smart Facilities to Mingli Elementary School, Hualien – Turning Over A New Leaf after the Earthquake

Located in the city center, Mingli Elementary School is the oldest elementary school in Hualien. After surviving the 0206 earthquake, the school marked its 120th birthday on May 11 under the leadership of its current principal, Mei-Chen Hsiao. The badly destroyed campus has been gradually repaired while reserving some part of the “post-earthquake sites” for disaster prevention teaching courses. This post-earthquake “celebration” includes the replanting of the century-old banyan tree as well as the unveiling of the “Smart Library and Smart Health Room.” It is hoped that aside from passing down the spirit of history, students’ reading habits and health conditions can be improved through big data analysis.

Ri-Wen Chen, the director of Qian Yun platform and Cloud Business Division said that Mingli Elementary School is our second successful case after Tongmen Elementary School. Related software and hardware systems of both schools’ libraries and smart health systems were integrated to enable teachers, students and community members to enjoy borrowing books from the library as well as improving the personal health management service, achieving the objective of transforming the campus into a community within a forward-looking plan.

The software and hardware donated to Mingli Elementary School by MiTAC and Yu Xiu Foundation includes: a cloud integration service platform, library automation system, multi-functional library workstation, self-service book borrowing and returning machine, IDSmart Bookshower, special book chip label, Easy Card digital library card, smart health station, automatic height and weight scales, and automatic blood pressure monitor. In the future, students of Mingli Elementary School will only need a digital library card to borrow and return books and conduct health measurement management. General community members can apply for a library card from the school to be able to use the library and health systems.

Principal Hsiao said Mingli Elementary School  is only the second school in Hualien to install a smart system and only one of 2 schools in Taiwan. The joint donations of MiTAC and the Yu Xiu Foundation are much appreciated as they allow students to access the latest technology during the campus’ repair process.
